Professor Syed Saad Andaleeb was the third Vice Chancellor of BRAC University and served from 2014  to 2018.

During his tenure, BRAC University was listed by QS Asian University Rankings as the #1 private university in Bangladesh, and #228 among Asia’s 400 top-ranked universities. Bangladesh’s first (nano) satellite was launched by the University in June 2017, partnering with Kyushu Institute of Technology, JAXA (Japan), NASA (USA), SPARSSO (Bangladesh) and BTRC (Bangladesh). During his four years, the University also introduced an outcome based general education program to instill five skills (communication, critical thinking, quantitative analysis, digital skills and global awareness), a Professional Development Center (to certify teaching competency), curricular reform, performance-based HR system, enhanced student support, the Scholars Program (to support advanced learners), annual faculty and staff awards, a Center for Peace & Justice (to take legal assistance to the grassroots), a Center for Inclusive Architecture & Urbanism (to study the urban challenges), intellectual property protection, IT integration, and various new policies to facilitate research and teaching. Professor Andaleeb also oversaw the pre-construction phase of BRAC University’s new and iconic campus building.

Professor Andaleeb completed his Ph.D. in Business Administration (Marketing) from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (USA), and earned a BS in Chemical Engineering and MBA from the University of New Hampshire (USA). His areas of specialization include strategic marketing, services marketing, research methodology, statistical/behavioral modeling and social enterprise growth.

Before joining BRAC University Professor Andaleeb was Distinguished Professor of Marketing (Emeritus) at the Sam & Irene Black School of Business, Pennsylvania State University, Erie, USA. He was also a member of the University Faculty Senate. He was appointed to the Graduate Faculty of Purdue University by the Department of Communication, in December 2009. He was also a faculty member at the prestigious Institute of Business Administration, University of Dhaka, and served as part-time teacher at Bangladesh University of Engineering Technology (BUET). He served short-term stints during his sabbatical at Independent University, Bangladesh and East West University and was involved in training faculty members at BRAC University’s, Institute of Educational Development. He has also conducted research methodology workshops at University of Liberal Arts, Bangladesh, training faculty members from a multitude of institutions. Additionally, he has served as trainer in many Executive Development Programs and was involved with Training of Trainers.

Professor Andaleeb served as a Board of Trustees member of BDREN (Bangladesh Research and Education Network) under the University Grants Commission, Bangladesh. He also served as Member, Board of Trustees, American Institute of Bangladesh Studies (USA) and as President for two terms of Bangladesh Development Initiative (USA). He continues to serve as Editor, Journal of Bangladesh Studies since 1999 and serves as Vice Chair of the Foundation for Learning Teaching & Research (an initiative of nine Vice Chancellors of Bangladesh). He served as National Coordinator for research, assisting the University Grants Commission’s Strategic Plan for Higher Education in Bangladesh: 2017-2030.

He has published in highly respected peer-reviewed journals such as Journal of Retailing, Journal of Business & Industrial Marketing, Social Science & Medicine, Health Policy and Planning, Journal of Retailing and Consumer Services, Journal of International Marketing, Journal of Services Marketing, and Journalism & Mass Communication Quarterly among many others. His present Google Scholar citation rate is 5551 with an h-index of 22 and i10 index of 27.

He has presented invited papers at Oxford University, the Harvard School of Public Health and Cornell University’s South Asia Program. He also presented a paper at a conference held at University of California, Berkeley on health metrics for hospitals in Bangladesh. He coordinated two conferences at Harvard University – Bangladesh in the 21st Century (in 2008) and Ideas and Innovations for the Development of Bangladesh: The Next Decade (in 2009). He was also in the organizing committee for the Conference at Berkeley: Bridging the Policy-Action Divide (2013).

He was selected as a Senior Fulbright Scholar, twice selected as a Fulbright Senior Specialist, and served as a peer reviewer for the Fulbright Senior Specialist Program. He has consulted for The World Bank, UNFPA, ILO, FAO, IFAD and various corporate bodies in the United States and Bangladesh; he has also advised the Government of Bangladesh on various social development programs including health care and education. With the Ministry of Education, Bangladesh, he was involved with Education with Quality and Equity (in preparation for the Millennium Development Goals). He served on the expert panel for Transparency International, Bangladesh.

Professor Andaleeb was the recipient of the Council of Fellows Excellence in Research Award, Pennsylvania State University, Erie PA, Spring 2000 and the Council of Fellows Excellence in Outreach Award, Spring 2003. He was also nominated for the Council of Fellows Excellence in Teaching Award in 2006. His research was in Top-20 list of Keio University, Japan for the paper, Explaining User Satisfaction with Academic Libraries: Strategic Implications. He received the Best Paper Award, Atlantic Marketing Association, Fourteenth Annual Conference, Savannah, Georgia, USA. He was the Walter Stellner Fellow, University of Illinois, Department of Business Administration, selected as the Albert Haring Symposium representative at Indiana University as a doctoral student from the University of Illinois, 1987. He was chosen for the American Marketing Association’s Doctoral Consortium representative from the University of Illinois.

His present pursuits include strategic management and capacity development of institutions of higher education in Bangladesh, university branding, managing sexual harassment in offices and public transportation, enhancing hospital service quality using patient metrics, and improving teaching quality. He also researches social innovation and social enterprise growth.

Professor Andaleeb plays chess (and was champion at St. Gregory’s High School; Dhaka College; and BUET), was coach/manager of the University of Dhaka basketball team that won the national championship in 1981, captained local cricket teams, played for the university cricket and basketball team at BUET, and enjoys playing the sitar when he has some quiet time. At present, he takes his vocation as a grandfather to his five grandchildren seriously.
